Job Description

The incumbent performs comparisons of latent prints with known inked prints; conducts fingerprint searches, both manually using the Henry system of classification, and electronically (digitally) using the Motorola/Printrak Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS) and the NEC (AFIS) systems. The incumbent must be able to qualify as an expert witness relative to the identification of fingerprints, both inked and latent; assist in the processing of crime scenes; attend autopsies for the purpose of fingerprinting deceased persons; maintain fingerprint files and update the Alexandria Justice Information System (AJIS) database with known fingerprint files; process various items/materials using a variety of fingerprint processing techniques, e.g., powders/chemicals that are routinely used to facilitate latent print processing; and perform other related duties as directed by the section commander, e.g., fingerprinting citizens, applicants, etc.

Minimum & Additional Requirements

One year experience in processing classification and analysis of latent prints, and the comple­tion of college courses in forensic science, criminal justice, latent fingerprint examination or related course work or any equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

Employees must possess a valid driver's license issued by the state of their residence.

The following equivalents may be used by applicants who do not precisely meet the education and experience requirements:

Education: A Bachelor's degree in a relevant field = 2 years experience, a Master's degree or Doctorate = 3 years experience.

Experience: At least one year of relevant experience above the minimum experience requirement may be substituted for the education requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

Certification by the International Association for Identification (IAI) in latent print identification; working knowledge of the Henry system and the National Criminal Information System (NCIC) of classification; working experience comparing latent prints and encoding fingerprint data from inked and latent prints; prior experience with processing powders and chemicals/liquids such as silver nitrate, ninhydrin, cyanoacrylate, and others; working knowledge of Alternate Light Source (ALS) processing techniques; experience using analogue and digital photography and computer software, e.g., Adobe Photo Shop and Microsoft Office PowerPoint; college level course work in forensic science dealing with fingerprints as well as other forensic science disciplines; and experience testifying in court as a fingerprint expert and giving an expert opinion as to the positive identification of a suspect(s) through the identification of fingerprint(s).

Notes

This position requires the successful completion of pre employment background checks. This includes a polygraph, and criminal background checks (local and federal).
