Latent Fingerprint Examiner

Salary Range

112 ($37,276 - $59,642) Pay may be adjusted based on level of experience

Duty Hours

8:00 AM - 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday or shift work as required

Duties

Evaluates and compares latent fingerprint evidence by use of magnifier and fingerprint comparator. Determines identity of individuals through analyzing latent fingerprints. Enters fingerprint information into Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS). Maintains evidence chain of custody, and record keeping. Testifies in court as an expert witness on fingerprint evidence. Advises crime scene personnel and police officers on technical issues such as appropriate methods to obtain and preserve latent fingerprints. Prepares chemical compounds and powders needed to process fingerprint evidence. Writes police reports to document fingerprint processing identification. Trains lower level personnel and police personnel on fingerprint classification systems, fingerprint crime scene techniques and fingerprint processing methods. Processes suspects and victim fingerprints by preparing ink rolled fingerprints; prepares ink rolled fingerprints from cadavers and amputated fingers. Provides technical assistance to lower level fingerprint technicians. Make photographic reproductions of fingerprint impressions. Acts as supervisor of the Fingerprint Unit as needed.

Qualifications

Training and Experience: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree in Administration of Criminal Justice or related field supplemented by completion of Federal Bureau of Investigation Fingerprint Classification and Interpretation Course and three years experience in fingerprinting including two years working with latent fingerprints; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Special Requirement: Certification as a Latent Fingerprint Examiner by the International Association for Identification or acceptable equivalent.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of the practices and principles of latent fingerprint examination and processing. Knowledge of the uses, applications and methods of fingerprint classification systems. Knowledge of Automated Fingerprint Identification Systems (AFIS). Knowledge of crime scene techniques and procedures as they relate to obtaining latent fingerprints. Skill in processing latent fingerprint evidence. Skill in interpreting fingerprints as evidence in police investigations and court proceedings. Skill in writing police reports. Ability to testify in court as an expert witness on fingerprint evidence. Ability to communicate effectively with police agencies, court officials, and co-workers. Ability to train others in fingerprint practices and methods. Ability to apply accepted codes, methods, and principles in processing latent fingerprints. Skill and ability to successfully complete assigned proficiency tests.
